Cultivating the Land: How Demeter Shaped Agricultural Practices of the Past

Demeter deeply loved her daughter, Persephone, and her emotions were tied to her daughter’s mood. According to the myth, this connection had an impact on weather conditions, which in turn influenced past agricultural cycles. When Demeter's heart swelled with happiness, crops flourished. Conversely when she was in bad mood, fields suffered, reflecting her sorrow.

The workshop’s primary goal is to engage attendees in the exploration of ancient agricultural practices, crop cultivation, and the agricultural economy, viewed through the lens of Greek mythology. Visitors will gain a deep understanding of the seasonal crops that sustained ancient populations, the role of agriculture in their daily lives, and the vital foods that were consumed not only for sustenance but also during religious ceremonies. 

Η Δήμητρα αγαπούσε την κόρη της, Περσεφόνη, και η διάθεσή της ήταν άρρηκτα συνδεδεμένη με αυτή της κόρης της. Σύμφωνα με τον μύθο, αυτή η σχέση είχε επιρροή στις καιρικές συνθήκες και επομένως στους αγροτικούς κύκλους του παρελθόντος. Όταν η καρδιά της Δήμητρας ήταν γεμάτη χαρά, οι σοδειές ανθούσαν. Όταν, αντιθέτως, ήταν σε κακή διάθεση, τα χωράφια υπέφεραν, αντανακλώντας τη θλίψη της.

Ο κύριος στόχος του εργαστηρίου είναι να παροτρύνει τους συμμετέχοντες να ανακαλύψουν τις αρχαίες αγροτικές πρακτικές, και την αγροτική οικονομία, μέσα από την αρχαία ελληνική μυθολογία. Οι επισκέπτες θα έχουν την ευκαιρία να γνωρίσουν τις εποχικές σοδειές, μέσω των οποίων επιβίωναν οι αρχαίοι πληθυσμοί, το ρόλο της γεωργίας στην καθημερινή ζωή και τα φαγητά που καταναλώνονταν όχι μόνο για την επιβίωση αλλά και κατά τις τελετουργίες τους.
